TerraCycle Continues its Expansion
TerraCycle US, a business renowned for its expertise in the collection of regulated waste and other scrap streams, has taken ownership of Complete Recycling Solutions, an e-scrap processor located in Massachusetts.
On June 20th, TerraCycle, located in Trenton, N.J., stated that they had acquired Complete Recycling Solutions (CRS). CRS has been working for over two decades on recycling electronics, fluorescent bulbs containing mercury, batteries, and lighting ballasts.
“The acquisition of Complete Recycling Solutions is an exciting next step in TerraCycle’s journey to reduce waste,” TerraCycle’s CEO, Tom Szaky states. “We entered the universal waste business in the U.S. in 2016 with the acquisition of Air Cycle Corp., now TerraCycle Regulated Waste.”
A “Global Waste Crisis”
The ongoing proliferation of throwaway consumer goods has created a global waste crisis, as noted by TerraCycle. Even though many materials are recyclable, they are usually not valuable enough for companies to recycle. This leads to waste being buried in landfills and contaminating the planet, while virgin materials are still taken from the earth to make new items.
The core goal of TerraCycle is to “Eliminate the Idea of Waste®.” Throughout the world, organizations, state bodies, and individuals are joining forces with the firm in an effort to keep garbage from being put into landfills or burned. By capitalizing on collaboration and innovation, TerraCycle has created unprecedented methods for reusing and recycling all types of waste material.
By working in conjunction with partners such as brands, retailers, and other stakeholders, TerraCycle has pioneered a system of recycling for “hard-to-recycle” items.
In 2016, the company made strides into recycling universal waste when it acquired Air Cycle Corporation. Currently, Air Cycle is a part of its Regulated Waste division and in 2022, this arm reported net sales of $5.8 million and income before taxes at $172,000.
Complete Recycling Solutions Employs “State-of-the-Art” Technology
CRS excels in the recycling sector by utilizing cutting-edge lamp recycling and mercury distillation equipment. This advanced technology can automatically separate out various lamp components for reuse in the marketplace. The company has been granted certification under the American National Standards Institute; accredited Responsible Recycling (R2) Standard for Electronics Recyclers developed by SERI, and carries 5 million dollars of Pollution Liability Insurance.
CRS also offers customers certifications to demonstrate the recycled materials were processed in accordance with Federal regulations 40 CFR. The firm currently has four 24′ box trucks and various 48′ trailers; each outfitted with power lift gates. Primarily serving the Northeastern United States, CRS can have one of its delivery vehicles onsite promptly. Additionally, UN DOT-Approved packaging is available for recycling purposes.
Following CRS’s acquisition, Keith Boyea will remain in his position as co-founder, former owner, and CEO. This was detailed in a recent press release.
“TerraCycle is the perfect partner and shares our mission to provide state-of-the-art solutions for recycling lighting and electronics waste,” Boyea stated.
“Together, with our combined resources, we will have greater access to expand the reach of our platforms, expand our collective customer base and bring a broader range of services to the businesses we serve.”
