Best Buy Launches its New Recycling Box While Partnering with ERI

ERI to fulfil the service side of Best Buy's new recycling program.

Best Buy and ERI Unite

This month marks the launch of Best Buy’s new Technology Recycling Box program, which allows customers to recycle outdated electronics easily. By sending in these items for recycling, users can help reduce waste and protect the environment as well.

Consumers are now able to purchase these specially designed boxes from the popular retailer, which are then used for shipping scrap electronics to ERI for recycling.

“We continue to build on our commitment to be there for our customers throughout the entire lifecycle of their products by making recycling simple and convenient,” Best Buy’s head of environmental sustainability Tim Dunn stated. “Sustainability is at the forefront of everything we do and this new service is another step we are taking to protect the planet today and for future generations.”

For Best Buy to achieve its desired goal of net zero emissions by 2040, the company’s new Technology Recycling Box is also a carbon neutral service.

Best Buy Focuses on a Circular Economy

Serving as a leader in e-waste collection, since 2009, Best Buy has recycled a massive 2.7 billion pounds of electronics and appliances.

As part of its commitment to environmental protection and to helping customers live sustainably, Best Buy has created recycling programs that help build the circular economy right into its business model. The concept of the circular economy is a framework which centers around keeping products and components in use for as long as it is possible to do so, instead of just disposing of them.

The launch of this nationwide service constitutes a significant milestone in the company’s commitment to the environment.

Best Buy’s pilot program expands on its existing recycling program which enables customers to recycle products with ease. Unwanted electronics can now be dropped off at any Best Buy store in the US or can be collected by scheduling a home pick-up via Haul-Away services.

A Three Step Process

Here’s how the Best Buy’s new Technology Recycling Box program works in three simple steps

  • Step 1: Customers can go to BestBuy.com for a prepaid box selection. Two sizes are available: a small box (9 X 5 X 3 – $22.99) that can hold up to 6 pounds, or a medium box option (18 X 14 X 4 – $29.99) with room for 15 lbs worth of items.
  • Step 2: Then, the box will arrive at the customer’s home. Individuals can put in any old tech items that might be laying around, such as tablets, cables, keyboards and more.
  • Step 3: The final stage of the process is to take the prepaid box to a local UPS store or arrange a pick-up. Finally, consumers can relax knowing that their electronics have been recycled responsibly and securely.

A Leader in IT Asset Disposition

It is no surprise that a major retailer such as Best Buy would choose to partner with ERI.

ERI stands as one of the foremost companies in the United States to offer comprehensive IT, electronics asset disposition and cybersecurity-focused hardware destruction services. Additionally, all of the company’s operations are conducted under strict adherence to the highest environmental and data security standards and certifications.

With ERI, every type of electronic device can be de-manufactured, recycled, or refurbished in an environmentally responsible manner.

SOC 2 Certification

ERI’s mission is to “protect people, the planet and privacy.”

Setting a new standard for the industry, ERI is proud to have received SOC 2 certification for security and data protection. Boasting a capacity of over one billion pounds of electronic waste per annum, the firm serves every corner of the United States with nine certified sites.

ERI’s partnership with Best Buy is only one of its many recent achievements. The ITAD industry continues to look forward to what ventures ERI will embark on next.
